WELCOME TO THE BRITISH HOLISTIC MEDICAL ASSOCIATION

The BHMA is an open association of mainstream healthcare professionals, CAM practitioners, and members of the public who want to adopt a more holistic approach in their own life and work.

  • Holistic healthcare - we are the voice of holism in medical care.

  • Mind, body and spirit - we support the three aspects in diagnosis and treatment

  • Alternatives - we inform about alternatives for managing illness. See IHR on this website

  • Physician heal thyself - is our motto so we are for self care of practitioners.

  • Integration of CAM within the NHS – we encourage this in order to widen choice.

  • The bigger picture - health has political, economic, environmental, community and family dimensions

  • Journal of Holistic Health - we promote understanding and discussion of the science and application of holistic health

Medicine as if People Matter

The BHMA launched its campaign to support the provision of medicine as if people matter in the May issue of the Journal of Holistic Healthcare. We are particularly concerned about people with long term conditions who need to rebuild health; frail older people; and people whose health problems are distressing and demanding. Medicine as if People Matter requires a shift away from target driven, tick-box medicine. It requires: compassion and caring; practitioners who feel valued and value themselves; patients who feel empowered to take responsibility for themselves as a result of being listened to and encouraged to be well informed. The BHMA's big task is to influence the healthcare system to deliver on these requirements. Insofar as systems are a collection of individuals, we believe that each of us can make a difference; the more people who share this vision of holism and the more such people feel they are not a lone voice, the greater the chance of success.

Holistic bloggers

'Patients often complain in general practice that they cannot see their own doctor.  There is no problem with access but it is continuity of care that is lacking.'  Read about a patient that ended up seeing 10 doctors - Dr Craig Brown's blog of 10/5/09. www.holisticgp.blogspot.com
