Dr William House becomes new Chairman of the BHMA
On 9th March 2013 Dr Craig Brown stepped down as chairman and as trustee of the BHMA. Over the past two years as chair, Craig has done a wonderful job in putting the administration and finances of the Association on a sounder footing. Thanks to Craig, we can now move forward with renewed energy and determination to work for more human and holistic healthcare. I am sure the members will want to join with the trustees in congratulating Craig on his achievement and wishing him well in the next phase of his life.
The trustee board have voted the vice-chair, Dr William House, as the new chair of the BHMA. You may know William for his regular column 'From the Frontline' and his occasional articles in the Journal of Holistic Healthcare over many years. William is now retired as a GP, but his interests remain the interface of the arts and healthcare, complexity theory, philosophy, the impact of politics and macroeconomics on healthcare, mental health and mind-body disorders, clinical commissioning and primary care research. He is currently most active in building healthier communities - creating health and wellbeing from the ground up. William will be steering the Association in a direction that fits with the needs and challenges of the 21st Century. William is an innovator and a change agent so watch this space!

What is the holistic message to the media? William House |
Dec 08 2012, 6:42 PM |

William House comments on the latest issue of the Journal of holistic healthcare as a rather good eclectic issue reflecting some of the many ways in which holism manifests itself. Medical education for holism is possibly the biggest thread, then dialogues on spirituality in healthcare, self care and individual and community responsibility and action. There is an article by Jeremy Swayne on holistic models for understanding suffering and caring, another on the uncaring machine of modernism, and me on the hegemony of the ‘academy’ with its analysis and objectivity vs human relationship. There is a problem conveying this to the general public as the press like a simple message! ...of course this is part of the problem: the reality is NOT simple. Do we make a media splash by drawing a simple message out of all of this – on compassion for instance? Reductionism will never depict holism. I don’t know what the answer is but maybe if we need to all sit down together some time and talk about it...or even have a debate on the internet. We could film a conversation (unscripted but facilitated so we stick to the question) and upload it to YouTube. |

Thinking globally, acting locally |

The global fund since its inception in 2002, has become the main funder of initiatives to fight HIV, TB, and malaria. 23 billion US$ of funding has been given out for more than 1,000 programmes in 151 countries, as of mid 2012. However it could be mired in uncertainty now that as the global economic crisis has slowed down or frozen some donor governments’ commitments. Over the last 10 years they have made significant improvements in treating these major diseases but donors are increasing pressure for better management and greater returns on their investments, and new measures are needed to ensure the GF keeps working effectively for years to come. |

Music Therapy | downloads: 667 | type: | size: 4 kB |
The NHS does not approve of many complementary therapies, as they do not have evidence to support their effectiveness. A study in Finland of 79 patients, reported in the British Journal of Psychiatry, shows the usefulness of music therapy in helping people recover from depression. The 600 music therapists in the UK can take heart that the report recommends that music therapy should be offered alongside conventional treatments. This is another step in the right direction to promote a holistic approach in healthcare.
