Self-Care - developing resilience to prevent burnout

It is essentiall that all healthcare workers understand, and are able to provide for, their own needs and well-being. This requires a culture of support amongst colleagues and organisations.  All practitioners need to be aware of the high risk of burnout and learn to develop resilience as a key skill as part of their practice.

  1. ‘Physician heal thyself’ is the motto of the BHMA and emphasis the importance for all practitioners to care for themselves.

  2. To have an awareness of the high incidence of mental illness and burnout in all healthcare practitioners and the need to take preventative measures.

  3. Be a good example of having a healthy lifestyle.

  4. Resilience, the ability to bounce back from adversity, is a key skill to learn and practice.
