It is essentiall that all healthcare workers understand, and are able to provide for, their own needs and well-being. This requires a culture of support amongst colleagues and organisations. All practitioners need to be aware of the high risk of burnout and learn to develop resilience as a key skill as part of their practice.
- ‘Physician heal thyself’ is the motto of the BHMA and emphasis the importance for all practitioners to care for themselves.
- To have an awareness of the high incidence of mental illness and burnout in all healthcare practitioners and the need to take preventative measures.
- Be a good example of having a healthy lifestyle.
- Resilience, the ability to bounce back from adversity, is a key skill to learn and practice.
